From September 15th to October 15th, we celebrate the impact Hispanics have had on the United States. Miguel Antonio Otero was an important figure who contributed in the economic development of New Mexico. He had many successes in his field of work as a government official and businessman. Miguel Antonio Otero was born on June 21, 1829 in Valencia, Nuevo México (New Mexico). Don Vicente Otero and Doña Gertrudis Aragón de Otero, his father and mother, were natives of Spain who had come to New Mexico as colonists.
Edith Chavez, whose ethnicity is Native American and Mexican, grew up under the guidance of her single mother. She was raised alongside her brothers Johnny and Tommy, and her younger sister Bryanna. She grew up in Roswell, New Mexico and now at the age of 23 years old lives in Spring Hill, Florida. Edith has nothing but high aspirations and determination for a successful future. Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a talented Mexican-American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, and fashion designer. On top of her career, she had respect, and was admired as a great role model by Mexican Americans. The “Queen of Tejano” music, her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine named her the “Top Latin Artist of the 90s” and then “Best Selling Latin Artist of the decade”. Selena ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting a music genre into the mainstream market.
One true amazing singer and songwriter was indeed Selena Quintanilla Perez. Selena was the youngest of three and was the most talented. Her first vocal group was with both her older brother and sister. She started her own fashion line in 1994. Although Selena had a great future ahead for herself, it ended unexpectedly.

Being a civil rights activist, social activist, and role model for women makes Maya Angelou a historical figure who has made a huge impact in American society and in American history. Born poor and black, she was a childhood victim of rape, shamed into silence. She was a young single mother who had to work at strip clubs for a living.
At my high school, most people believe that being Hispanic means you are from Mexico. As an officer in my school’s Hispanic Society, I work to educate fellow students that being Hispanic includes many nationalities and cultures. Both of my parents are from Guatemala, and my Hispanic heritage is strong. This is why I participate in Hispanic Society.
