Within my sixteen years of dancing, I have come across the different styles of ballet, jazz, modern/contemporary, hip-hop, etc. Throughout those years, I have not only picked up on these different styles, I have also picked up the history behind those styles. I was introduced to the modern movement of Isadora Duncan at the age of 10. Isadora Duncan is truly a pioneer of modern dance. She was the first to break away from the very constricting style of ballet and create a sense of freedom through her movement. My goal in this paper is to exhibit the true brilliance behind Isadora Duncan’s aesthetic of modern dance and her style of composition. To achieve my goal in expressing the true brilliance behind Isadora Duncan’s aesthetic of modern dance I have divided my paper into four sections, one of which has sub-sections. Duncan was a child of a divorced household and was raised by her mother. Her mother, Dora, was a piano teacher who taught her children her same appreciation for the arts. Isadora Duncan’s legacy started at the age of 6 when she began to teach movement to the children in her neighborhood. Word spread and Isadora’s classes became fairly packed. By age 10, she begged to leave the public school system and began teaching with her older sister, Elizabeth, so that they could begin to make income from their classes. She grew up very poor; therefore, dropping out of school to teach dance impacted her life more positively than it did negatively. In 1896, Duncan joined Augustin Daly’s theater company in New York and quickly grew tired of the style. She later moved to break away from that style and began her own aesthetic of dance.
