ISB201 Human Population/ Poverty/ Environmental Economics Homework

1. For a very long time, the idea of poverty and environmental degradation has been taken as separate global issues although they have many factors in common (Shah, 2005). Being in poverty and lacking insufficient funds does not create a space to truly care about the environment. Environmental degradation can in reverse, allow for people to fall into poverty (Bharadwaj, 2017). According to the World Bank, “The poor do not willfully degrade the environment but poor families often lack the resources to avoid degrading their environment” (“2. They’re not really going to be focused on whether their food is healthy or if their actions lead to the pollution and degradation of the land, they are out here trying to survive (“2. Poverty and Land Degradation”, n.d.). Although it is believed that affluence causes environmental degradation because of over-consumption, poverty is the actual cause. The idea of being sustainable and caring about the environment became important after the era of industrialization that heavily polluted cities, this caused people to care more about the environment. Industrialization leads to a country becoming richer, therefore a good economy leads to a healthy environment because people are rich enough to care more (“Poverty Causes Environmental Degradation”, n.d.). When you are struggling to make, ends meet, your first thoughts are never in “will this hurt the environment” but rather “how can I feed my children”. Like said by the World Bank, the poor don’t mean to hurt the environment, but they have bigger problems that they must deal with than the current state of their land.
