Memoirs of a Boy Soldier ★★★★ I rated this book 4 stars because I really enjoyed reading this book and learning about what goes on with the children(mainly boys) out in Sierra Leone. It was interesting knowing that these are the kind of things that happen in the third-world countries and the children are forced to live through it. 2. Page Number: 33 Short passage: “He kept screaming, ‘My head! My brains!’ The rebels laughed at him. Finally, he stopped and slowly raised his hands towards his face like a person hesitant to look in a mirror. ‘I can see! I can hear!’he cried out, and fainted. It turned out that the rebels hadn 't shot him but fired at close range near his head. They were very amused at the old man 's reaction.” …show more content…
My opinion: I feel that if Ishmael was given the option to join the military or go to America with his friends, I think he would have gone to America. No teenager should have to be forced to kill people and I wished Ishmael and his group fought back with in the rebel group when they were captured by the rebels. I also hoped that he would have been able to escape everything before he got picked up by the army and I think he was not a terrible person he was just ordered to terrible acts. 4. Event: Men from UNICEF came to the camp where Ishmael and the military were at. The two men went to talk to the Lieutenant and when they came out of the tent the Lieutenant went to get the youngest soldiers from the camp. They were ordered to get in the truck with the men from UNICEF where they were taken to Freetown to begin a rehabilitation process and go into school. Explanation: This event is the turning point in the life of Ishmael because this is the first time he was able to truly get away from the war since it had started. Ishmael is able to escape all of the brutal fighting but he now suffers from the withdrawal time of the drugs. During this withdrawal he and the other boys raid the medical supplies for drug to supply their addiction. 5. What did you learn about life as a result of reading this
