In the crucible by Arthur miller, took place in a small town named Salem Massachusetts, late 1600s. A massive amount of people were accused and found guilty in the court of law, what was their crime? Witchery. In the crucible the book had three themes listening to false accusations, greed and vengeance.
In The Crucible, a lot of characters were not judged fairly. Most of them were jailed or killed and it provided little proof of witchcraft. One character for example was Rebecca Nurse. Rebecca was first brought to trial when her name was brought up into court and so she was brought in to determine if she was capable of witchcraft or not. During the trial, Mary Warren pretended that Rebecca has summoned her soul to choke her.
Due to paranoia, the once quiet town of Salem, Massachusetts has erupted with accusations, rumors, revenge, and in the end, death. The one thing that makes or breaks these characters is reputation. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, goes back to the year 1692 when witchcraft took over Salem. Neighbors are now seen as enemies and no one can be trusted. Over 15 people died in this true, American event because of false, witchcraft accusations.
Reverend Parris is a man in his 40’s that is a minister of the town, and lives with his daughter, Betty, and his niece, Abigail, in Salem, Massachusetts. He finds Abigail and Betty in the woods dancing around a fire with Tituba, and practicing what he thinks is witchcraft. As he finds them dancing around the fire and practicing what he thinks is witchcraft, because of his reputation of being the minister of the town, he hopes that no one will find out about what he has seen and potentially ruin his reputation. Throughout The Crucible by Arthur Miller Parris goes through ups and downs with the town and the townspeople. “Abigail, I have fought here three long years to bend these stiff-necked people to me, and now, just now when some good respect is rising for me in the parish, you compromise my very character” (Miller 1263).
The two subjects that i will be comparing today are “The Crucibles” and “The Dying Girl That No One Helped”. Both of the stories are similar in many different ways but also have many differences. “The Crucibles” is about a town named salem where the town minister found a group of girls practicing witchcraft including his niece Abigail. Abigail and the group of girls started accusing everybody of practicing witchcraft to deflect blame from themselves. Reverend Proctor being the one accusing the girls of witchcraft, would be questioned for having witchcraft at his own home.
The play The Crucible written by Arthur Miller is about the Salem witch trials of 1692 witch resulted in the death of nineteen innocent people. The plot begins in a small Puritan community in Salem, Massachusetts when Abigail Williams and several other young girls were caught in the woods dancing around a fire by her uncle Reverend Parris. His appearance shocked some of the girls into silence. The strange behavior of the girls resulted in many of the townspeople to turn to witchcraft as the cause of their behavior.
In The Crucible when everyone found out that someone was being accused of Witchcraft they all became scared for their lives. The same thing that happened in the United States during McCarthyism when someone was accused of being a Communist everyone became scared of that person. During The Crucible Thomas Putnam accuses Beatty Parris of Witchcraft with no evidence that she had anything to do with witchcraft. In McCarthyism McCarthy blamed people being Communists when he had no proof they were Communists. In The Crucible if you did not confess to being a witch or associating with the devil you were hanged just like John Proctor was when he did not confess to seeing the devil.
When people are placed under an intense feeling of fear, they begin to commit actions they never thought they were capable over. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, a young group of girls commit witchcraft which eventually leads to the arrest of over 100 women. This is similar to a time in the 1950s when Joseph McCarthy accuses government officials of communism and that ultimately leads to hundreds of citizens losing their jobs. The Crucible reveals the similarities between The Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s and McCarthyism of the 1950s because it demonstrates how a society can be tremendously impacted by the feeling the fear.
In 1692 hundreds of people were sitting in jail for being witches, but none of them were really witches. An author named Arthur Miller wrote the play The Crucible based of the true events of the Salem witch trials. In the play some girls get in trouble for dancing in the woods. They claim the witches were making them do these bad things. The girls accused a lot of people and got a lot of people of hang for being witches.
“The Crucible” is a fiction story that took place in a small town called Salem in the state of Massachusetts in 1692 during the spring time. The plot of this story is about a group of girls who went into the forest led by a black slave named Tituba. They were all dancing in the forest until Reverend Parris caught them dancing in the forest and even saw one of the girl naked. Parris’s daughter Betty who was there in the forest falls into a coma-like state when Reverend Parris caught them. Reverend Parris only noticed his daughter was sick the next day and accused Abigail William, who is Reverend Parris’s niece, of witchery and caused his daughter to go into a coma-like state.

Religion In The Crucible In The Crucible, religion is a theme that aids in developing the story, it helps to begin the story and build the plot. Religion in the story is what, overall, pushes many people to talk about witchcraft, and blame it on others. Though religion is normally thought of as a thing of value amongst those who follow one, the people of Salem use it to their advantage, as trying to take someone 's land. “Old scores could be settled on a plane of heavenly combat between Lucifer and the Lord” shows how the people of this time period could call a person evil, or a witch, in order to take their property from them, using religion all the while (Miller 8).
Mr. Hampton exhibits the Caring Learner profile trait because all throughout the book, Mr. Hampton shows empathy for Arthur by making Arthur work for him instead of making him do time in the Juvenile Detention home for an enormous amount of time. According to the book, the text states,”’Now it says here you’ll be working four hours a week for Mr. Hampton until you complete the one hundred twenty hours required by the court,’” The effect on others trait of the indirect characterization family shows that Mr. Hampton gave Arthur another chance instead of sending him straight to the Detention home. An additional quote to support this claim is,”After arthur and the judge finished taking, mr. Hampton stood up and asked the bailiff if he could have
The whole story in revolved around the scandal of witchcraft. People would be accused of being a witch for several absurd reasons. If someone looked like a witch, was an unusual person, or was a woman that would be enough to be accused of witchcraft. In the beginning of The Crucible, several girls are shown naked dancing around a fire.
The short story “The Lottery”,by Shirley Jackson, is a brilliant short story that represents very specific literary devices that paint a beautiful scene of town tradition while having a sense of anxiousness throughout the story. The author does so by providing a third-person objective point of view for the reader to be able to observe the entirety of the conflict occurring in the story. Doing so the author provides an outlook on all of the character’s emotions and thoughts during the proceedings of the event. This is seen as the story begins, “Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example; Bobby and Harry Jones and Dickie Delacroix”, this shows the author focusing on multiple characters
