What Were The Reasons That Islam Spread So Quickly? In the world there are over 4,000 religions that currently exist. Islam is considered to be a new religion but is very popular. Almost one in every four people in the world practice Islam. In 600 CE Islam not only became a religion but became popular. “A local merchant named Muhammad retreated to a cave outside the city of Mecca in Arabia to meditate. The Ghazu is raids against other tribes. “For centuries the Arabs had tried to raid the richer settled lands beyond the Arabian peninsula: the difference was that this time they encountered a power vacuum.” (Document D) Beyond the Arabian peninsula is the Persia and Byzantine Empire. The Persia and Byzantium Empire had been involved in wars with each other for decades. They were tired and worn out from fighting. The Ghazu helped Islam spread so quickly because when the Arabs conquered Persia and the Byzantine Empire they brought their religion along with them. The Persians and Byzantium then started practicing and adopting the Islam religion. The fourth reason Islam spread so quickly is because of the people of Hims. The people of Hims are the Syrians and non-muslims who had been under the Byzantine rule. “The battle they fought at al-Yarmuk was of the fiercest and bloodiest kind…” (Document F) In the battle there were 24,000 Moslems and over 70,000 Byzantines. However with Allah’s help 70,000 of those Byzantine were killed. The people of Hims helped Islam spread so quickly because their deaths showed the muslims that Allah was real.
