There are hundreds of religions in the world, and each one is different. This essay will be discussing the 2 religions of Buddhism and Islam. In the essay, it will list the similar regions in which the religions are practiced, and discuss the religions’ similarities and differences. It will also highlight important attributes of the 2 religions. Islam and Buddhism are very different and you will learn about each one as the essay progresses.
Buddhism and Islam are both widely practiced in the eastern region of the world (Asia, Middle East). The countries where Buddhism is most practiced include Mongolia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar. The name Buddha means “enlightened one” and the name Buddhism means “teachings of the Buddha.” Buddhism was founded by the Buddha, and is based on the teachings of Buddha. There is no single sacred book, but instead there are sacred texts, including the Dhammapada, Tripitaka, and the Lotus Sutra. Buddhists believe that they will achieve complete peace and happiness (nirvana) by eliminating their attachment to worldly things. Nirvana can be reached by following the Noble Eightfold Path: right views, right resolve, right speech, right conduct, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. There are 3 branches of Buddhism; Theravada, Mahayana, and Mantrayana. Buddha’s teachings are essentially atheistic, and Theravada Buddhism is atheistic. However, Mahayana Buddhism believes the universe is populated with buddhas and bodhisattvas who are worshiped as gods and goddesses. Buddhism leaders include Buddhist monks and nuns. An important holiday in Buddhism is Vesak. Vesak is the Buddha’s birthday and the most important festival in Buddhism.
