Isolation Demonstrated Through the Mental State of all Kinds In 2020, Covid-19 took over the world causing many people to become separated from the community. In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley explores the same theme of separation and isolation. The mental state of both Victor and his creature change drastically as the novel drives forward. The origin of these events begin as Shelley gives a closer look into the emotions of each character. Although these emotions portray similarities between the creature and Victor, there are many traits that make both characters stand out. As the creature tells victor to make him a partner creature he vilely states, “I will cause fear; and chiefly towards you my arch-enemy, because my creator, do I swear inextinguishable hatred. Have a care: I will work at your destruction, nor finish until I desolate your heart, so that you curse the hour of your birth” (Shelley 137). As the creature threatens Victor, he becomes more of a monster by wanting to kill all of Victor's family for revenge. The creature is so aggravated that the reader can not understand what is going through his mind. The day after Victor destroys the second creature, he goes back to his lab: “the remains of the half-finished creature, whom I had destroyed, lay scattered on the floor, and I almost felt as if I had mangled the living flesh of a human being” (Shelley 165). The feelings Victor portrays illustrate that he is going insane causing him to lash out. Victor demolishing his second creature and comparing it to a human is a difficult idea for a reader to comprehend.
