When in the middle of playing a game of basketball, baseball, hockey, any sport played, is there ever an obnoxious parent in the stands yelling at their child to do better? Today I'll be speaking about the issues and effects of over involved parents in sports. Due to the mental damage of young children, or the love of a sport being crushed and ruined all because of over involved parents this issue needs to be helped.
Parents push their kids to be better than everyone else, to almost be machine perfect which causes deterioration in relationships, decrease in sport officials, and a large impact on youth physical and mental health. Some children are stuck playing in fear of their parents interfering and making comments about their performance which causes the child to push further away. Parents cause their children to experience embarrassment in front of their other teammates / coaches because of them storming out on the field enraged arguing with a call or a major decision that was made by officials. Obnoxious parents are also not letting the game belong to their child, putting large amounts of pressure on their children to not fail which also causes fear and the relationship to snap. These parents are dropping the number of referees and officials in youth sports because they don't want their child to go through failure, but all they are doing is ruining teachable moments by screaming and getting involved in situations that they are not welcomed in. Coaches are also fed up with the parents telling them how to do their job and usually at that age the coach is a volunteer, they will no longer volunteer if they are being treated poorly. Some of the Mental and Physical impacts towards our youth include children playing in fear, In 2017 the book Trophy Son was written by tennis player, Anton Stratis, “Anton’s dad is a former Olympic swimmer and retired millionaire who focuses all his energy on Anton. In one part of the book, Anton’s dad refuses to let him drink water on a hot day while he hits hundreds of balls on the family’s private court” (Cohn). This father put so much pressure on this child to follow his Olympic glory although the money wasn't an issue to him the pride was, which resulted in a child going through unsafe practices. This issue causes children to lose interest and joy in playing sports knowing their parents are going to interfere. If nothing changes children could get into a place of fear regarding the parent or even
