Many times during the interview with Liz Bentz, she repeated the phrase, “It was a victory for truth.” Deception stood at the forefront of the Cold War; thus with the fall of the deceitful USSR, the United States came out victorious in a war, in eyes of Bentz, on truth. Born during the Cold War, Liz Bentz witnessed the fall of an empire at a young age, and she has a story to tell about it. To better understand her story requires background information on the war itself. Before the events of the Cold War, World War II had recently ended. Unlike the recently-ended World War II, full of fighting, the Cold War had no fighting between the two superpowers; however, the USSR and the U.S. attacked each other indirectly in other places like Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. Less about fighting, these indirect attacks in other countries focused more on competition and flaunting their superiority. Sparse fighting did happen between the two nations such as when American aircrafts would enter USSR airspace and promptly get shot down, and a similar discourse took place during the Korean War ("Brief"). Like the Korean War, the fight between the Soviet Union and the United States divided Vietnam during the Vietnam War until North Vietnam reclaimed the south, rendering the country communist ("Vietnam"). For many, the end of the war came with the fall of the wall that divided East and West Berlin; however, the Cold War ended two years after the fall of the wall. A multitude of reasons involving the USSR’s fall exist. A combination of an increase in America’s military finances and the new Soviet leader straying from dictatorship most likely caused the Soviet Union’s fall and ultimately the end of the Cold War (“Fall”). The Cold War also helped save the West from Communism as, without the Cold War, the U.S. may have shifted from a democracy to a dictatorship. The friendships and rivalries between nations today faced a great impact by the events that took place during the Cold War (Williams).
