“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” was the quote used to portray the feeling in England and France in 1775, in spite of the fact that it's a contradictory statement it compares both, the negative and positive aspects of both countries. Dickens portrays both setting and character’s point of view throughout the novel. This shows the reader positives and negatives of London, Paris and the characters through the book. The main characters in the book were Charles Darnay, Sydney Carton, Dr. Manette, and Lucie. These three characters portray this message throughout the novel. Charles Darnay, Marquis Evremonde nephew, was put on trial for being accused of sharing secret information to King Louis XVI of France. After the witnesses spoke against Charles, he lost hope and waited for the death sentence ahead of him. However, Doctor Manette and Lucie spoke as witnesses and mention good things about Darnay. In the end Charles verdict was not guilty. If it wasn’t for the trial he would’ve never met the love of his life. “It is a time of fervent admiration, true homage, and deep love..” In this quote, Charles admitted to Doctor Manette his love for Lucie. Charles is at the best point of his life. Shortly after, he married Lucie and had a daughter and a son but he passed away at a young age. While in France during the Revolution, Darnay got arrested for having ties with the Evremonde family. For over a year he was imprisoned, until he was finally discharged. However a few days after being discharged, he was once again arrested and sentenced to death. This was the worst of time for himself and Lucie. Carton sacrificed his life for Charles by switching spots do that Carton would be executed instead of Charles. “One can depart. Forward, my position! A good journey!” In this quote, the man that is checking for who is allowed to leave France comes across the carriage with Mr. Lorry, Darnay, Lucie . They were allowed to pass and this turns into one of the best times for Darnay since he finally gets to go back with living with his family.
