Throughout history, this nation has been the home to the arts, catholicism, and a great empire. This country saw the rise of a dictator, and was involved in two world wars. Throughout the years this nation has been governed in a plethora of ways ranging from a republic to emperors to fascism. This country has enjoyed the fruits of its labor, and the benefits of being located on the Mediterranean Sea. This country is Italy, or as it is known to its’ people Italia. Throughout the history of the world the Italians have been conquers or the conquered. There has been no in between. This means that they use principles of economics that are similar to both a command and a market economy. A command economy is one that is controlled more by the government than it is by the people. While, the market economy is lead by the private enterprises and the government has little say (Mcgannon, Bob). When thinking about Italy’s economy, consider both of these types. The one thing that is the telling factor between which type of economy Italy has is this: “The Italian economy is driven in large part by the manufacture of high-quality consumer goods produced by small and medium-sized enterprises, many of them family-owned” (“Italy”). This indicates that Italy operates under an economic system that is mixed. This means that Italy does not have one true economic system. It is actually a blend of both the command and market economies. The thing is though that because of the large part of the economy being run by family owned enterprises it leans heavily towards one than the other. That one type is the market economy. Italy leans heavily toward this type of economy because in the definition listed above, Italy’s economy is run more by the family owned businesses than the government. While Italy might have a mixed economy, for now it is leaning more towards a market economy than it is a command
