The Italian Renaissance- Synopsis The Italian Renaissance started in the late 14th century and it ended in the 17th century. This era took place mainly in Italian providences like Florence and Tuscany. The Renaissance was made possible because Italy became a trade center and because people referred as patrons had enough money to support artists, scientists, and architects. The architecture during the Renaissance was greatly influence by the architecture of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The architecture of the Renaissance was mainly composed of domes, columns, arches, pilasters, and pediments. The greatest architect of the Renaissance was Filippo Brunelleschi, he built the dome of Florence Cathedral and he even started to create a measuring system so his structures would appear to be the same in their dimensions. Another great architect of the Italian Renaissance was Leon Battista Alberti; he based his structures from the fronts of ancient Roman temples and his greatest work was the church of Santa Maria Novella. Alberti didn’t see architecture as just building things but rather as a form of expression and communication. Andrea Palladio was another highly skilled architect and during the Renaissance he was the chief architect of the Venetian Republic. Palladio wrote the famous books of I Quattro Libra Dell'Architettura or in English the Four Books of Architecture, he was also know for his for specializing in domestic architecture, villas, and building the church of San Giorgio Maggiore.
