Prior to the idea of people being “citizens” of a nation, people were subjects, with no rights and forced to serve under the iron fist of their ruler. The idea of people having rights and responsibilities to their country originated in Athens, Greece circa 500 B.C. (Background Essay). Rome, however, far surpassed the Greeks in their social contract theory of citizenship (Background Essay) for the following reasons: 1) More people were considered citizens i.e. females and sons of freed slaves; 2)
When in Rome Rome has a better system than Athens in my opinion. Athens citizens have more responsibility and rights then Rome. Rome has more of a family oriented style of citizenship. Athens and rome both honored citizenship in their own ways equally.
Athens and Sparta shared many common values and views but also had their differences. They were both city-states which is a city and its surrounding villages functioning as an independent political unit. Athens and Sparta were city-States over empires because of all of the mountains in Greece that separated the land and they acted as a modern day state would. For example, one city-state would have different views and government than a city-state on the other side of a mountain. Athens and Sparta had similar values and views on how to treat people, but had differed views on education and government.
Ancient Greece, a thriving country consisting of nearly 100 city states from within. A gem of the Archaic and Classical Greek Era that we have come to discover. While the country thrived, they also had much tension from within caused by its two leading cities, Athens and Sparta. Athens, a democratic and well invested political city found apprehension with their neighboring municipality Sparta, a highly dense military society. Though the two cities shared several traits such as slavery and gradation systeming, they were separated by their political and economic differences.
Rome is a united culture while the Greeks are selfish and internally destroy their societal
One characteristic of empires and civilizations is that they sometimes purposefully, sometimes inadvertently share aspects of their culture with neighboring and future societies. Both Greece and Rome were influential forces in the Mediterranean Region during the Hellenistic era. Each was instrumental in the transmission of technology in terms of architecture, military innovation, and political organization across the western world. The Greek civilization was a networked group of city states who benefitted from their ability to share ideas, develop new ways of thinking and technologies, where as the Roman Empire was more concerned with demonstrating a sense of supreme power and the expansion of their territorial influence to outside cultures.
However, not only did they have differences but they had similarities to. A couple of their similarities was that there both were the capital of Rome, they worshiped Roman Gods, they exported wine and marble, and they both spoke Latin (Admin). Now most of these similarities that they share are more of your common daily life procedures. However, these two periods happen to be very common and different at the very same time, it is just a matter on whether or not which angle you are looking at. Whether it from government point of view, a law point of you, or just you daily religious
Today, many of the world’s government structures were based on the principle of one of Greece’s city-states. Greece became a country advancing well before its time, strong in both military and brain power. This country was able to produce two city-states that became foundations to advancing the rest of the world. The first city-state, Athens, is thought to be the first to implement a democratic government while Sparta became known for their military power. While Athens and Sparta provide the world with advancements they differ in the ways of government structures, social motivations, and cultural differences.
And, the minority of people throughout the empire who were Roman citizens were intensely proud of this privilege. Strong political ideals and interests created some similarities between Greco- Roman society and the Confucian values of classical China, although the concept of active citizenship was distinctive in the Mediterranean cultures. However, Greece and Rome did not develop a single or cohesive set of political institutions to rival China's divinely sanctioned emperor or its elaborate bureaucracy. So in addition to political intensity and localism as characteristics of Mediterranean civilization, we must note great diversity in political forms.
Athens and Sparta, located between the Aegean and the Ionian Sea, allied with each other in the Greco-Persian war. Due to the advanced and powerful navy of Athens incorporation with the well-built army of Sparta, they gained victory over the Persian Empire. After the victory, Athens gained wealth and dominance over the other Greek societies causing tensions between Sparta. They both share similarities towards their cultural background but had different views in creating an ideal society in addition to their state’s place in the world. Moreover, they differ from the concepts of a well trained or educated society and a well built military, but share similarities in their government format.
Despite some similarities between the ancient Greeks and Romans, they differed significantly. Several other differences also exist, such as geography, government, the status of women, the economy, and art. Athens and Sparta were among the most potent ancient Greek cities that operated independently of one another. Athenians, Spartans, and their allies were often at war, and Greece's society was divided into slaves, freedmen, metics, citizens, and women.
Rome and Sparta were both highly militarized societies, but the Spartan state was much more stratified and totalitarian than the Roman state. In Sparta, the state exercised total control over the lives of all classes, while the Romans were more flexible and inclusive. The Peloponnesian War was a conflict that broke out in 431 B.C. that pitted Athens and Sparta primarily against each other.
The ancient Romans and Greeks both began their legacy as a city-state; both of them are Mediterranean cities. Ancient Rome and ancient Greece both played a huge role in historic dynasty yet they are both different. Ancient Greece came to light after researches were made. The empire of Athens only lasted 5 years, where Rome 's empire lasted 500 years. Sculptures, paintings and architecture differ in each civilization.
Greece and Rome, two ancient societies, both influenced many aspects of modern life. Their advancements were utilized in many later cultures. They influenced almost every part of today’s world, such as government, language, and architecture, as well as making scientific advancements. Also, the successes of these two civilizations lead to many countries modeling most of their public facilities and systems after the ones found in Greece and Rome. Ancient culture strongly influenced modern culture by means of language.
Ancient Greek and ancient Rome are often confused with one another even though there are great differences between the two. Both countries are Mediterranean but have social class differences, different mythology, different life values and different architectural concepts. It is said that much of what Rome used in everyday life was taken from the ancient Greek civilization as the ancient Greek civilization started 5th century BC. And it was not till hundreds of years later that the roman civilization started. Cities in Ancient Greece were differentiated by hills.
