It’s A Sin To Kill a Mockingbird

“Lawyers, I suppose, were children once”. Courage is a great quality to have in life. It is the quality of mind that enables a person to face difficulty without fear. Atticus is known for having courage in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. In the town of Maycomb an attorney, Atticus, is defending Tom; a black man. The town discriminates black people, which makes it even more difficult for Atticus to do this trial. Atticus Finch shows courage while overcoming obstacles, which shows that despite traditional evils embedded in society there is still goodness in individuals.
Atticus hasAtticus wants Jem and Scout to not bring harm to others even though they have different beliefs. While talking to Jem and Scout about the “But remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”(119). Lee uses this phrase as a symbol. This represents how everyone in the Maycomb community repeats or does the same thing everyone else does just like how mockingbirds repeat each other. Courage is important to the understanding of this book because at one point in the story the characters have shown bravery and in different ways. Atticus showed courage at times that were difficult. For example the mob that he was up against, Mrs. Dubose and her uncivil remarks, and having to go go against a whole town’s beliefs on black people. These are the barriers that Atticus had to face days leading up to the trial just because he believed in racial equality. Atticus challenged racism at a time when racism was very popular.
