One of the world’s best known and most loved classical musicians is the remarkable violinist, Itzhak Perlman. Itzhak Perlman is a 72 year old Israeli-American violinist, conductor, and teacher. Born on August 31st, 1945, Itzhak Perlman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel. Itzhak was drawn to the violin from the age of 3, but when he was 4 he contracted polio, losing the use of both his legs. At age 5, he began studies at the Tel Aviv Academy with the Russian-trained Rivka Goldgart. Perlman did not move to the United States until he was 13. In 1958, Perlman performed on Ed Sullivan’s show playing Mendelssohn Violin Concerto an Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee. There are 4 different programs that they hold throughout the year. The Littles Program, which is 7 weeks and takes place on Shelter Island, NY during the summer, is for musicians ages 12-18 which is typically filled with 40 students. They also have another program for the older students 18+. Known as the Chamber Music Workshop, the students spend 2 weeks on the Shelter Island campus at the beginning of summer, focusing only on chamber music. The next program is located in Itzhak Perlman’s hometown, Tel Aviv, Israel. This program is known as the Tel Aviv Residency. Taking place every other year during spring break, students from the Littles Program, Chamber Music Workshop, and Tel Aviv students all gather together in Israel to make chamber music together, receive private lessons, perform, and practice. The last program that the Perlmans coordinate is the Sarasota Winter Residency. This Residency is a combination of all the programs and takes place for 2 ½ weeks during winter break in Sarasota, Florida. The Perlman Music Program faculty works hard to make sure all the schedules work so that there is a perfect amount of practice time, chamber rehearsals and coaching, orchestra rehearsals, and number of recitals.
