Ivory Coast is a country that lies in West Africa. It is bordered by Liberia to the west; Guinea to the northwest; Mali and Burkina Faso to the north; Ghana to the east; and the Atlantic Ocean to the South. Ivory Coast has an estimated population of 24 million people (Central Intelligence Agency, 2016). It has Yamoussoukro as it political capital and Abidjan as its economic capital. During the 60s and the 70s, the Ivory Coast was west Africa’s economic powerhouse. Its 80's was characterized by an economic crisis that triggered sociopolitical turmoil within the country (Central Intelligence Agency, 2016). Ivory Coast is a free market economy where agriculture and cash crop production are the dominant sectors. French is Ivory Coast’s official language. Cote d’Ivoire earned $3.58 billion from its Cocoa bean exports in 2014, making cocoa beans the country’s leading export earner, and Ivory Coast the world’s leading cocoa exports earner. Cocoa beans are usually processed into chocolate and cocoa powder. Nestle, Hershey’s, and Cadbury are the international corporations that buy Ivory Coast cocoa beans. The Ivory Coast lies within the tropics where it experiences constant humidity suitable for cocoa trees. Cocoa is grown by small-scale farmers in Ivory Coast. The crop serves as an income earner to these farmers.
Coffee
Coffee is Ivory Coast second largest commodity being exported. Ivory Coast dominated Africa in coffee production during the 70s and the 80s. Ivory Coast produces the Robusta type of coffee. Coffee was introduced by the French colonizers in Ivory coast in the 19th Century. Today, a lot of French companies have and are still investing in the Ivorian coffee sector. The two Ivorian civil wars lowered coffee production from its peak 380,000tons in 2000 to 32,291tons in 2011. Coffee production in 2013 was 103,743tons. Ivory coast plans to achieve a coffee production of 400,000tons by 2020.
