The battle of Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest battles in World War II. The United States was dragged into Iwo Jima in February 1945. This battle made everyone see the ways of the Japanese fighting, which made it harder to win the war. This battle also was historic because of the flag rising on Mt. Suribachi. The battle of Iwo Jima was a significant turning point in World War II because it led to the end of Japan’s fight in WWII. The island of Iwo Jima was wanted by America and Japan. Allied powers were developing plans for the Invasion of Okinawa, but were faced with offensive, which was Iwo Jima. 7,000 US marines were killed in action, doctors were killed, bloody bodies of dead and wounded were in the way of soldiers (Burgan, 2011) and all of the Japanese were killed except for the ones captured and the ones who hid in the tunnels. Americans soldiers captured Iwo Jima on March 26, 1945. The battle of Iwo Jima was an intense battle. After all of the intense fighting the war finally came to a close. In the end Americans won the battle. America won the battle by raising the American Flag on Mt. Suribachi on February 23, raising your countries flag on the fighting land is a sign victory. At the end of the war Americans were honored with many awards. There were 27 Medals of Honor given in 1954. Plus “a bronze monument of the historical event of the soldiers raising the flag was placed in Washington D.C” (Brown) , Years later the island of Iwo Jima was returned to Japan in 1968. The battle of Iwo Jima was an incredibly historic war. The battle of Iwo Jima was a significant turning point in World War II because it led to the end of Japan’s fight in World War II. This battle had an impact on U.S history because; one, it made a monument to remind the U.S about the war and two, it showed the U.S about the Japanese fighting style which was frightening even to this day.
