February 23, 1945, Joe Rosenthal took a photo of 5 U.S. Marines and a Navy sailor working together to raise the American flag on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima.
During World War II, America was at war with japan. While fighting on one of their pacific islands, troops were told to raise an American flag on the top of Mount Suribachi, which they just gain on the island. A few hours later the flag was said to be too small to see from the base. The troops were told to raise a second flag that was so big that everyone of the island could see it.
