The song I choose to analyze as poetry is J. Cole’s song “Hold It Down”. This song is from his mixtape The Warm Up, which is my favorite mixtape by him. This song is produced and written by J. Cole whose real name is Jermaine Lamarr Cole. He produces his own songs and writes them himself, which is one of the reasons why he is my favorite rapper. Whenever I am having a bad day, I always find myself listening to this song. There is something original about him that sets him apart from other artists. Any person who listens to J. Cole could tell he is speaking genuinely from his heart and pouring his soul into this song, which attracts to me to this song. When I am sad I know this song can lift me up since one of the beginning lines says, “ Cause life is hard mentally, and everything is meant to be” (2-3). Imagery is when a person can visualize an image that an artist has sung. We can see imagery throughout this song countless times, but mostly in the second verse. The impact that imagery has on the song is it allows me to use the words to create an image of what the rapper is trying to portray. When including imagery, it allows me to understand what the piece of work is saying. I can imagine Cole hanging out with his friend at the skating rink, hitting on girls, or him keeping his friends newest clothes. J.
