Knowing God by J.I. Packer is book that has helped shape evangelical Christian belief and had a profound effect on the community of believers. The central theme and goal of this book is in the title; Knowing God. The church today, even more so than when this book was originally written has drifted from this fundamental truth. To truly know and understand God is to be able to participate in worship that God is worthy of and deserves. Therefore, Packers call us to study God and lays out a beautiful message.
J.I. Packer was born in England in the 1926. He was awarded a scholarship to the Prestigious University of Oxford. Packer achieved a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and a Doctorate of Philosophy. While there he heard maybe the most influential man in 20th century Christianity, C.S. Lewis. He was an ordained Deacon in the Church of England. From there he would fill many different roles in serving the church and society. He would eventually end up at Regent College (Vancouver) where he would become a Professor of Theology. I was intrigued from the state of theology, the fact that a person has a lot of theological training and yet miss having true knowledge of God. Then going through the evidence of knowing God was an incredible exercise. These things seem so simple but Packer lays out in a way in which engages the reader. From there the story of truly knowing and KNOWING God unfolds. Chapter 7, which is titled God Unchanging is the next chapter that put things so plainly; and this is desperately need in today’s church. God’s Life does not Change, God’s truth does not change no matter how much society believes they have a right to change. The fact is this chapter needs to be required reading for all churches and believers. God is the same today, he will be the same tomorrow. Therefore, we need God’s wisdom not our
