Women in the entertainment industry are constantly subjected to stereotypes for not being able to meet the same standards as men. Many women have had to fight for the opportunity to be equal to a man. The most empowering women in the business are philanthropists. Female philanthropists have been able to prove themselves as strong women by engaging themselves in helping those in need. Joanne Rowling, better known by her pen name J.K. Rowling is one of these women. Rowling is a hardworking female author who evolved the lives of many as an empowering woman. Rowling donated loads of her money and time to benefit many charities and organizations. Rowling gave great amounts of money to charity, mostly to “foundations involving the welfare and literacy of children” (“J.K. Rowling,” Encyclopedia). In 2005, Rowling “founded the Children’s High-Level Group (CHLG) now known as Lumos” (“J.K. Rowling,” Philanthropic). This organization works to “end the systematic institutionalization of children across Europe and help them find safer, more caring places to live” (“J.K. Rowling,” Philanthropic). She later created another charity called Volant that “Supports and helps fight social deprivation especially for women and children” (“J.K. Rowling,” Philanthropic). She worked with many other charities and organizations such as “Comic Relief, The Maggie’s Centres for Cancer Care, the UK Labor Party, Doctors Without Borders, and more” (“J.K. Rowling,” Philanthropic). Rowling handwrote a copy of her book The Tales of Beetle the Bard and auctioned it off in 2007. The book was “sold for £1.95 million making it the most expensive book ever and all of the money was donated to her charity [Lumos]” (“J.K. Rowling,” Encyclopedia).
