Jack Gladney is a typical modern father. He works all day long as a college professor, but when he gets home he pays attention to his children and always keeps track of where they are and what they are doing. His is a model of good parenting because readers can tell that Jack not only cares about his own children, Heinrich, Steffie, and Wilder, but Babette’s children from a previous marriage as well. He wants both his and Babette’s children to get along since they all live under one roof. In the beginning of the novel, Steffie and Denise did not get along because Steffie felt that Denise was a little bossy. Antigone, the main protagonist, went against Creon’s orders and buried her brother Polyneices who Creon felt did not deserve a proper burial. Creon was not a good father to his son Haimon because he was in love with Antigone and sentenced her to death. Haimon had respect for his father and tried to understand his reasoning behind punishing Antigone for her crime, but ultimately felt his father was wrong. Creon followed through with the punishment of Antigone who eventually hung herself. Haimon was distraught about the death of Antigone and killed himself as well. Creon deserves full blame in this situation because he failed to listen to his son who advised him not to harm Antigone. As a result, he lost his son, the one child he had. Jack is father who listens to his children and will do anything to help and provide for them. However, Creon is a cruel father who ignored his son’s wishes resulting in the death of his son. Jack Gladney is less dysfunction when placed next to other “male” father’s we’ve explored this year because he wants what is best for his children.
