When Jack London said, “I would rather be superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.”, I heartily believe that he meant that he would rather be unique and actually living, than being stuck inside and just simply existing. I completely agree with London and I think that people who partake in extreme sports would agree as well. This statement relates to extreme sports because the people who are doing these activities are doing it either to feel alive, or because it is just a healthy drugless addiction, this is shown in all 3 articles that i read about extreme sports. John Donovan wrote an article in 2009 entitled “Camp for Kids with Autism Offers Extreme Therapy Colorado Getaway Features Rafting, Rock Climbing, Skiing, Rope Courses and More”. The article centers on a camp for autistic children, where they engage in “extreme sports” ( extreme games) activities such as zip-lining, running with ropes on tree level height while being safely cradled by a harness, and more. They were sheltered from the world because of their disabilities, but the camp made them feel alive. The metaphoric elements of London’s quote is relevant to the camp goers, and for me as well. To me, going outside and being myself is an extreme sport. With life comes judgement, i took a risk by dressing the way I do, acting the way I do, talking the way I do, and being who I am which is the most personal experience regarding extreme sports I have ever encountered. People may hear me saying this and say that this isn’t anything like extreme sports, but to me, after what I have been through to be able to finally live the lifestyle I want to live, i think that is enough evidence for me to consider it extreme.
