A former choirmaster and the head boy at his school, Jack arrived on the island, on a plane that was shot down. At that time period, World War II was occurring. Some of the significant kids along with Jack were Ralph, Roger, and Piggy. In the beginning of the novel, Ralph and Piggy find a conch shell and they blow it to signal the other kids on the island. Jack arrives with his choir group to see who had the conch shell. Later, after Ralph meets everyone he decides there needs to be a chief to control things. Jack argues that he should be the leader because he is the choir leader. Roger suggests a vote; majority of the people voted for Ralph. This made Jack furious and he refused to be in Ralph’s tribe. When he came to the island, he could not even kill a pig. Jack was scared because he was not used to the environment in the island. However, as time went on Jack was adapting to the environment. It began with hunting meat but soon Jack killed Piggy, Wilfred, and Simon. He tortured Wilfred just for his amusement. This is the drastic change that portrays to the readers that Jack has finally moved to the evil side. “He capered towards Bill, and the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness.”(Golding 64) In order for Jack to live with himself, he war painted his face so that people could not recognize him. Jack did not want others to know how his behavior has become worse and that the need for power is nerve wrecking. Jack knew that in order to get power he needed to the tribe to listen to him. These factors described Jack unusually personality. Jack was known to be fun and that is why the boys joined his tribe. He was not a good role model compared to Ralph.
