Jackie Robinson was a world renown baseball player. Robinson was born on January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia. He was the first black athlete to play major league baseball. Robinson was also known as a civil rights activist during his time. He helped the Dodgers win the championship in world series in 1955. Jackie Robinson dealt with many obstacles before he became the great athlete he was known to be today from racial abuses and financial hardships to starting the civil rights movement.

At the start of his first game many people doubted him but he in fact, ended up winning rookie of the year his first year in the Major Leagues. In 1949 Robinson and a few other african American players participated in the first All-star game that was open to blacks. In October of 1949, Robinson was named most valuable player in the Major League. He also won the batting title by batting .342. In 1950 Robinson starred in his own biography film The Jackie Robinson Story. Robinson led the Dodgers to their first World championship in 1955. They beat the yankees by 4 games to 3. After announcing his retirement in 1957, Robinson along with Martin Luther King Jr. , receives an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Howard University. Robinson was entered in the Hall of fame in Cooperstown on July 23, 1963. Due to Jackie´s strong feelings on racial equality, he joined MLK jr. in the civil rights Protest in Birmingham, Alabama. Jackie Robinson stated, “I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me... All I ask is that you respect me as a human being.” In 1968 Jackie was named National Chairman of the Brotherhood Week for the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Robinson dealt with many racial insults and threats because of his color. When Branch Rickey the general manager of the Dodgers offered Robinson a position on the team in 1946, he made Robinson agree to his conditions. His conditions were that he must take the abuse and handle it gracefully. He was not allowed to respond to any abuse given to him by anyone. This is because the comments and threats were all to be expected for what Robinson and Ricky were getting ready to take on. Ricky knew he was giving Robinson an opportunity that was going to cause to cause social riots. If Robinson wanted to play as bad as he had said, he had to agree to deal with the problems that it came with. Robinson was given what would have been considered a once in a lifetime chance at the the time so he was not willing to risk his chance by responding to the abuse. Another obstacle that Jackie Robinson had to deal with was financial hardships. Robinson was one of five siblings and was the grandson of a slave. He was born to a sharecropper. Robinson was raised in a middle-class, white neighborhood in california shortly after his father deserted the family. Due to the fact that one mother had to take care and provide for five kids, the family obviously struggled financially.
