Just because someone is unlikable, doesn’t mean they don’t have strong leadership skills. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of boys get stranded on an Island and are left with nothing and no adults to guide them.To survive, there’s one person that can give them what they desire. Jack is good at leading the boys because he is confident of his leadership skills, gives them what they want and does not bow to pressure which ultimately unites them.

The first qualitiy that makes Jack a good leader is his ability to unite the boys. He knows how to get them to follow and respect him. When Jack proposes the idea of hunting, he motivates the boys to work together with him by offering them something they want, which is meat. Jack says "’We'll hunt. I'm going to be chief’" (Golding, 163). Jack organises the hunters and gives them a sense of purpose, saying they'll "get meat for everybody" (Golding, 44). Him being very sure of himself lets him make decisions quickly and assertively. When talking about the beast, Jack says "’Bollocks to the rules! We're strong―we hunt! If there's a beast, we'll hunt it down!’" (Golding, 110). This quote shows Jack's ability to remain composed and courageous in the face of fear, which gives the other boys a sense of safety. Also, when he challenges Ralph's position as leader, Jack confidently says, "I ought to be chief because I'm chapter chorister and head boy." (Golding, 24).
