The fact that an innocent child can instantly turn into a cold blooded murderer. The novel Lord of the Flies is about boys chance of survival and how they cope with living on the island with no supervision.The boys have the choice to succumb to savagery or innocence. Lord of the Flies author William Golding shows that evil is within people and they have to overcome that evil. This novel shows that anyone can either overcome evil or let it override them. The characters, Jack and Ralph are the main examples of who overcomes evil or who lets it override them and succumb to savagery. Over the course of the novel Jack changes into someone that he was opposite of in the beginning. Jack’s transformation is very black and white; he goes from strict, well put together and innocent to a savage. Jack felt the need to succumb to savagery, he was goal oriented in an animal like way, he would rather hunt than build shelters. In the novel Piggy states “ What are we? Humans? or animals? or savages? What’s grownups going to think? going off - hunting pigs- letting fires go out- and now!” This shows the change of Jack’s actions towards the group. Hunting, talking about the beast, letting fires go out. Everyone is noticing the change in him. In the beginning of the novel Jack is a leader to the choir boys and he is the one to keep them in line and in order, eventually Jack turns into a child like Hitler rather than a leader. Jack was a very strict leader yet he would not torture the boys. Towards the end Jack breaks into his own tribe. He would only let certain boys in the group and torture them. Jack was involved in the killings of Simon and Piggy, and then later hunting Ralph. In the novel the drastic change of Jack becomes almost easy to pick out. Jack turned into something that he would never think he would be. Additionally Ralph drastically changes over the course of the novel and especially at the end despite the similarities of Jack.
