Character Journal: Jacob
In the beginning for the book Jacob was pretty obedient, he listened to orders from his mother and father and worked on the farm when he wasn't working his main job at the mill. Though he was a good boy around his parents he had a dark side. He loved to party. Once a week he would go out with his friends that he made from his job in the city. He would drink and smoke with his new friends and his parents and siblings didn't like. Jacob at this time was not baptized which means that though the partying was frowned upon it wasnt worthy of being shunned. They both have two different personalities. Jacob is a rebellious kid that is obsessed with the outside world. He wants to normal in the eyes of non Amish people while Esle is a picture perfect child (for the most part). He follows orders, goes to church and does what his parents say abiding by rules at all cost. Jacob goes and gets a job outside of the community at a mill while Esle stayed and worked on the farm. While Jacob was becoming more and more english Esle was looking forward to being baptized with his brother. Much too Esles surprise Jacob split. He left for the city taking his money that his mother had been saving with him. Jacob cut his beard and hair so that he could fit in while Esle was angrily wondering why he didn't know something was wrong. Jacob made friends and got a girlfriend named Jessica. During this time Esle also got a girlfriend named Judith. Jacob began his spiral out of control partying more than ever and straying away from God. Esle on the other hand was doing better than even he could believe. Things were going great with Judith and he even got baptized. Though Jacob and Esle look different they still act in the same ways sooner or later. While Jacob was partying Esle was being pressured to see his girlfriend more and more so he decided to miss church to leave and go see Judith. Jacob grew up in the Amish community as a boy following rules and listening to his parents. As he grew up he developed a hatred for all of the rules and strict behavior being Amish required. While this was happening he became more and more interestested in the outside world and used his job at the mill as an excuse to leave the Amish. His love for the English grew and he started to sneak out at night and party with some of his friends from work particularly Jimmy, Jessica, and Lil. He finally realized he wanted to leave the community before he was baptized so that his family wouldn't be shunned. Jimmy had different circumstances with basically the same outcome. His family was shunned from the Amish community because his father burnt a barn down. Because of this he had a hatred for the amish community. As Jacob shaved his beared and cut his hair so that nobody would notice that he was Amish, Jimmy’s family changed their last name to _____ from ______ so that the would be associated with the Amish. This is where Jacob and Jimmy differ. When Jacob, Jimmy, Lil, and Jessica were together Jimmy had the idea to burn some Amish barns down basically as an act of revenge because of what happened to him father. Jacob did not participate in the barn burning becaus he fell out of the car due to being drunk and high. None the less Jacob would not have participated in the burnings regardless of the state that he was in. We know this because of his
