Jacob Varner, also known as Jake Varner was born March 24, 1986. He is the son of Steve and Renee Varner, no to mention he is an Olympic Gold Medalist. In college he wrestled for the Iowa State Cyclones and majored in criminal justice. He was one of America’s greatest wrestlers, because his high school and college career prepared him for internationals, he worked hard to achieve goals he set for himself, and he set a path for other wrestlers to follow who aspire to be as great as him. High School and college wrestling both prepared Varner for his future career. He went to Bakersfield High School in Bakersfield, California. According to jakevarner.com he ended his high school career with an overall record of 159-10, with 132 falls (pins). In high school Varner was a 4-time state qualifier, and 2-time State Champion. Varner was a talented wrestler, obtaining state titles in one of the most difficult states for high school wrestling. After high school, he went to Iowa State University with a scholarship to wrestle. He concluded his final season as a cyclone and as a repeat NCAA 197-pound champion. Ever since Varner was younger, he has been training and working hard. He wanted to push himself to compete to the best of his ability. Varner said, “In order to be the best, you have to beat the best. It also sometimes helps when you’re being coached by the best, as well.” Meaning in order for him to become great and succeed he had to defeat anyone in his way. Varner always prepared himself before his matches and was always ready to wrestle. According to Coach Sanderson “Varner was the same in the final as in any other match.
