In this Article Jacoby has a clear argument about bringing back flogging. Jacoby believes that flogging should be brought back to replace the standard conventional methods of violent and non-violent offenders. He reminds us that the Puritan forefathers of Boston had no tolerance for wrongs doings. However, we currently practice more humane ways of discipline by imprisoning criminals. Likewise, the courts use imprisonment for nearly every criminal offense. Although we imprison criminals, crime continues to escalate uncontrollably and very few believe in the efficiency of the justice system. Richard Hopkins, in 1632 was sentenced to get whipped and branded with a hot iron because he was selling fire arms and gun powder to Indians. Another example that Jacoby mentioned was Hannah Newell pleaded guilty to adultery and got the punishment of fifteen stripes to be hit on her bare back in the middle of where everyone would be around. By giving these examples Jacoby shows how flogging was a quicker way of punishing people for small crimes. Flogging, in Jacoby's eyes got straight to the point.Jacoby also says that corporal punishment didn't end with the Puritans, (a group of English protestants who believed in flogging) the state of Delaware didn't stop until 1972 which was about 200 years after all of that was happening. Although those crimes aren't really that much of a bigger deal nowadays, those crimes are equivalent to an eighteen year old getting locked up for months at a time for just having maybe drugs or getting in trouble for theft. We should do flogging because we fear what prisoners might do if we release them. Say if we do flogging, the painful punishment would make people around the world not do criminal things like committing murder, laundering money to selling marijuana, robberies, etc. Flogging is tough stuff and considered as a barbaric punishment that the 21th Western came up with. Also if you think about it flogging is much quicker, cheaper, educational, and a more effective way than imprisonment. It’s more painful, but they deserve it for doing criminal things.
