Unresolved love is a process of many ever-changing emotions. This idea is ever present in The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. The store follows Jake Barnes throughout his excursion to Spain in the 1920’s with his old flame, Lady Brett, who is sadly taken at the moment. The story at face value appears to be almost nonexistent honestly put. There is a reason why Ernest Hemingway’s first novel is considered a classic though. By using minor characters Hemingway subtly shows Jake’s emotions towards Lady Brett. The three characters most clearly symbolizing Jake Barnes feelings are Robert Cohn, Mike Campbell and Pedro Romero. The cessation of any relationship even with acceptance on the sides of the isle rarely comes to a full conclusion without a period of great yearning for the “good ol days”. Robert Cohn is cleverly placed in The Sun Also Rises to exaggerate Jake’s want to have her back. He tries his hardest to be protective of Lady Brett. As the aforementioned Cohn was seen as an annoyance and some what of a creep due to the stalking like tendencies. Mike tries to “protect” Brett by telling Cohn to “Go Away! Go Away now!” (Hemingway 182). Now this may seem natural for any husband to act when Jakes says that “it’s been damned hard on Mike, having Cohn around…”( Hemingway 185). This comment shows a level of empathy that Jake has. The empathy shows the audience that he also still has that protective bone in his bone for her. It is why he sticks around to make sure she is safe and happy though she is not in a relationship with him. This is ever apparent as at he saves her from her other lover, Pedro Romero, to finish off the book. Though while on the topic of Pedro let us explore what emotion he embodied for
