Jay Gatsby and Jake Garret both had the American dream and the desire for popularity and acceptance. The realistic fiction novel Jake, Reinvented by Gordon Korman is a contemporary retelling of the classic historical fiction novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. These books share many similarities, but also have differences such as The Great Gatsby takes place during the early 1920s in the lives of adults and Jake, Reinvented takes place during a modern day time period in the lives of high school teenagers. The Great Gatsby takes place during the early 1920s on Long Island and in New York City when there was an age of dramatic social and political change in society. Jake, Reinvented takes place during a modern day time period among the lives of high school teenagers. The characters in Jake, Reinvented are younger and more immature than the characters in The Great Gatsby. These settings differences affect what happened at the parties in the stories. In Jake, Reinvented, Jake threw crazy parties with rowdy, drunk high school students and at times things got very out of hand. “Didi sprang over, and as she moved, she raised the champagne bottle she’d been hugging all night. Then, with a snap of her impossibly delicate wrist, she brought the bottle down on Nelson’s head. It shattered” (Korman 173). This event was the result of Nelson going after Jake because he thought Jake was hooking up with his girlfriend when it was actually Todd that Melissa was cheating on him with. Didi had knocked Nelson unconscious and as that happened a fire started from gasoline and alcohol mixing together. The cops came to the house and found Nelson on the floor. Jake had to go to court and he ended up taking the blame Didi hitting Nelson on the head. Jake then had to move out of the state so he moved to Texas to live with his mom.
