James Allen Hendrix who was better known as Al Hendrix was born in 1919, in Vancouver, Canada. Lucille Jeter was born in 1925, in Seattle, Washington, where Al moved to in the early 1940’s and met Lucille. Al and Lucille had a brief courtship before they got married, due to Lucille getting pregnant. They had to get married as soon as possible because of the morals of that time. The couple barely had time to get married on March 31st, 1942, let alone get to know each other before Al was drafted three days later. The United States had just entered World War II, and Al was stationed a lot further away from home, and for a lot longer than had been anticipated (Unterberger 5). Shortly after fixing his guitar, Jimmy joined his first band, The Velvetones (James Marshall Hendrix). It is thought to be because of his dire material circumstances, yet, Jimmy’s guitar never left his side, he carried it everywhere, he even slept with it (Unterberger 10). Guitar lessons were definitely out of the question, so Jimmy started to teach himself how to play, all by listening to the radio, and records. Jimmy had huge hands, and it ended up being a great advantage for him. Having large hands enabled him to be able to pull of riffs and fingerings, that many other players simply could not do (Unterberger 11). After three months of performing with The Velvetones, Jimmy left to pursue his own interests. That next summer Al purchased Jimmy his first electric guitar, a Supro Ozark 1560S. This guitar was designed for right-handers, like most, but Jimmy was naturally left-handed, so in order for him to play it, he had to restring the guitar and play it upside down from its original position (Unterberger 10).
