I believe that the prosecution built their case knowing that James Earl Ray had escaped from prison and they knew he hated black people. Then finding out later that he had obtained an illegal passport and other items, the prints on the rifle, plus statements given by witnesses. The clothes, the binoculars and the receipt that was left behind at the hotel, then later, the white Mustang that was abandoned in Georgia was enough evidence against Ray.
