James Grover Thurber was born December 8, 1894 and died November 2, 1961, he was an American cartoonist and an author. Thurber was born in Columbus, Ohio to parents Charles L. Thurber and Mary Agnus Fisher Thurber both of which served as very influential to both him and his writing. As a child he had many obstacles arise, such as his brother leaving him blinded in one eye after he shot Thurber in the eye. Due to this early onset eyesight complication, he quickly learned to adapt and find way to cope with his pain, such as writing. After college he went to become a writer for “The New Yorker” magazine, where is writing career began to take off. The books that were a result of this quickly raised in popularity and soon became adapted into both television and movies. Later in his career he became completely blind which subsequently ended his cartoonist career, however this did not stop him from continuing to write his books. James Thurber’s contributions to today’s modern literature are many. Although many people don’t know his name, almost everyone familiar with modern literature knows his work. He began to influence people with his early comic strips that weren’t just full of pictures, but also loaded with controversial topics and ideas not accepted in the society of which he was a part of. Some of his most influential and far reaching works include “Is Sex Necessary”, and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, due to these stories ability to address ideas not deemed suitable for the community in the time period that he lived. The main ideas he expressed were sex, and the effects on a man caused by a woman being overbearing and too protective. These works serve as an example to modern day writers to be themselves and write what they as an author believe to be correct in their writing
