“Everthing Will be Okay” Literary Essay In the story “ Everything Will be Okay” by James Howe, the main character James is constantly pressured into being like his brothers and his dad. One day, James stumbled upon a sick stray kitten. His dad and brothers also eat deer while James doesn’t want to, making James become hopeful when it comes to taking care of the kitten and becoming his own person. The first reason why James is hopeful when it comes to taking care of the kitten is because James reassures the kitten. When James first found the sick kitten while playing in the woods, she stroked the kitten’s head, telling it: “Don’t worry,” and that “Everything will be okay,” to try to reassure the very sick kitten that he would be okay. James was saddened when he saw the dead deer on the table. “I could see the deer’s eyes, even from the kitchen table. There was life in them still. Only the deer and I knew that there was life the bullet had missed; it was in the eyes.” When James says “There was life in them still,” it showed that he was still hopeful for the deer even though it was dead.
