Remarkable is the first word that comes to mind when I hear about James Joule. He was able to accomplish great things due to the way in which he lived his life. He has contributed significantly to science with his experimentation. In addition to this, he lived a life of impressive morals and goals. One primarily emphasized aspect of his life is, understandably, his scientific contributions. The modern unit J (Joule) was named after him in honor of the research he conducted. Joule managed to become one of the most influential scientists of his time without receiving a formal education from a university. He never tired of the relentless complex details of his experimentation process; and in addition to this, he continued experimenting with concepts that were seemingly unrelated to the scientific community at the time. His first published papers were chiefly ignored, neither bothered to be accepted or rejected. After seven years of experimentation Joule’s work was finally recognized. It would have been easy for him to become frustrated before this point, but he persevered. I think that part of the reason Joule was so inspired to work as he did was his faith in God. Joule stated that his study of science was “a holy undertaking”. I agree that God can be seen and appreciated through the understanding of the natural world he has so masterfully created. Joule’s faith likely played a part in his beliefs and morals as well as his understanding of his place in the world as a sinner saved by undeserved grace. These would formulate a person sufficiently confident in God that not being appreciated in the world would not be an issue. Additionally, painstaking detail would seem less of an ordeal if done considering its impact on the future generations. Joule’s faith and behavior were crucial in his progress to
