The man who discovered gold is James Marshall. James Marshall was born at the family homestead in Hopewell Township New Jersey on October 8, 1810. The family homestead was known as the Round Mountain Farm and is still known as Marshall's Corner. He was the oldest of four children, and the only male. At the age of six James Marshall and his family relocated to nearby Lambertville.
James left New Jersey in 1834 and headed west. After spending time in Indiana and Illinois, he settled in Missouri in 1844, and began farming along the Missouri river. Two years later his doctor told him that a common disease was going around the area, Marshall left Missouri in the hopes of improving his health. Sutter’s mill had gold hidden in it when James marshall found it which started the gold rush. The mill was a place built by Sutter’s crew, it still is a place for people to visit today. The mill was playing a big role in the gold rush because gold was found in it. The american river was the river that Sutters mill was on, this river brought the gold to the mill which was then discovered by James marshall. The river also played a role in the gold rush because that is were people went to try to find gold.
How it was discovered(story)
It was a cold morning at the top of a hill when James marshall was given instructions from John Sutter, his orders were to survey the mill and the workers. “I’m on it.” said Marshall, he got on his horse and made his way to the banks of the river. He stopped at different parts of the mill and the river calling out to his mates “Hey Stan, how’s it going!” and “Hi Greg, looks like you have a lot of work to do. Keep it moving!”. He was walking more when he found a shiny lump in the wheel of the mill, “what’s this?” He said picking it up “Could this be gold?” he went over to a big rock and hit it with a hammer. It was squashed but didn't break “ It’s gold! I have found gold!”, he quickly got on his horse to tell his friends. When he arrived he said “Boys I do believe I have found a gold
