Monroe’s father, Spence Monroe, was of Scottish descent, and his mother, Elizabeth Jones Monroe, of Welsh descent. The family were owners of a modest 600 acres (240 hectares) in Virginia. In the year of 1776 Monroe decided to drop out of college to join the Third Virginia Regiment. In 1778, he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel. Two more years passed and he became a law apprentice under Governor Thomas Jefferson from 1780 until 1781. He was then elected to be a member of the Virginia House of Delegates’ Executive Council in 1782.
