The History of Basketball: 1891-present From the time basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, it has evolved in many ways to get to what it is now. Basketball has affected the daily lives of the American people since it was invented; it has also reduced obesity in children and created a passion shared by different people all over the world including the United States. Naismith, with all of his imaginative planning, could not have dreamed his "Peach Basket" game would develop into the world's greatest indoor sport. Although the original 13 rules have been expanded to over 100, the spirit and principles of the original rules are still in effect in today. Major rule changes over the years addressed the number of players, the court boundaries, dribbling, and the elimination of the center jump after made baskets. In the mid 1930's inter-sectional competition led to a standardization of rules throughout the country. You can make it into the NBA by just being skillful in basketball, going to college and loving basketball. The NBA requires every player that has a hope of entering the NBA to have a college degree, they do this to make sure you have a backup plan when you basketball career didn’t work out or you decide to retire. Basketball needs certain equipment to play like a basketball a court and hoops but the question is why they are made differently than all the other sports. It is made differently because first of all because a basketball is supposed to be able to bounce on the court so a basketball is made with more rubber unlike a football and a tennis ball. A basketball is also made differently because the player has to be able to grip the ball in order to dribble. Grades are needed for basketball because players need to be smart in order to be able to calculate the distance of a free-throw and sometimes calculate the speed to pass the ball too your teammates and many other reason on and off the court. Grades are also needed in basketball because if there is an intention of making it into the NBA it is required that you have a college degree and in most states it is requires to make a 75 and above in every class you
