Have you ever felt the honor and fame of being #1. In James Ullman short story about an expedition and the 4th highest peak in the world. After while 3 men stick out Osborn the young and honored rookie , Nace the englishman who this is his 6th them climbing K3 and Frank the narrator. Osborn and Nace are racing to be the first to climb K3. The James Ullman uses suspense to see who will be the top man. Ullman uses dialogue to show the suspense to be the top man. For example when Osborn runs away, Ullman uses this to show suspense because there is mystery of where osborn is. In the story it mentions on page 47 "What is it " I asked "Osborn he's gone . This is significant because suspense do to Osborn running away and Nace and Frank has to find him or make the assault on K3 early. Another example is when osborn almost fell off the face of K3 Ullman uses Nace to make the scene more suspenseful because if osborn dies then Nace has a easy shot at being the top man. On page 46 it says "I am going to reach out my axe" This assists the building of suspense because an axe just by itself it is heavy and with being thousands of feet in the air your body does not air making everything had to do and lifting a man with a axe is no easy task. Osborn leaves camp and Frank is able to find him with his binoculars this sparks suspense for what is to lead. On page 44 is says "As I spoke the figure of Osborn sprang up ". This is important to build a suspense because now that Frank spotted him they know how far he is and if they should wait or climb. Another example is when Nace dies. Ullman uses a 1st person narration to show how what chaos is happening. On page 40 it says "The sicking spasm convusled my body, as the rope went taunt".
