Middletown is a humorous play about aimless characters going through life centered in Middletown,USA an ordinary and homely, yet dead and draining, middle class place with colorful residents. Whether it be the awkward interactions between characters in the beginning, like when Mary Swanson (played by Jenna Zarifopolus) meets John Dodge (played by Jospeh Masi) in the library, or when the police officer (played by Drew Morris) puts the mechanic in a chokehold, or even the characters odd in-adherence to social conventions such as how several charachters, especially John speak what ever comes to their mind with no filter, Middletown can leave audiences wondering where exactly is this play going to go in the beginning. By by the middle and latter portions of the play it becomes obvious that the production is not just about the lives of wacky residents in some typical …show more content…

The despair of life is presented when it is revealed that John is in the hospital, then dies after a suicide attempt. On the other hand, the beauty of life is displayed after baby John is born, all of these moments in the play helped settle in themes of life as well as death. Another common theme was loneliness, several characters seemed to be alone, such as Mary when her husband did not make it in time for the birth, or John’s loneliness being a driving factor behind his suicide. We saw an attempted break from loneliness when the odd ball John asked Mary for a hug, or when Mary offered him a sandwich. Simple gestures like those in the play, often made huge statements. The play also explored the stability of humans. The most stable was the librarian (played by Audra Hans), the least wackiest of all the characters, the police officer, possibly the most over the top character, Mary who seemed to be nervous and on the verge of instability, and John the least stable of them all.
