Jane Addams is remembered for many things, some remembered them as great. Some people remember her actions as disgraceful. As Jane Addams once said, "Action indeed is the sole medium of expression for ethics." (Biography.com 1) This statement is interpreted as her saying, "If you take the right actions, they will be the key to having an effect on the event in your favor." This quote explains that her actions seen as bad and good were meant to support her cause. Laura James Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois on September 6, 1860. She attended medical school later and traveled a lot (Biography.com Editors 1). When she got older, she visited the Tonybee Hall in the East End of London and saw a settlement house with her friend, Ellen Gates Starr. In 1889, both of them started the Hull House which is one of the first settlement houses in the United States. The Hull House helped the less fortunate and was a center for social reform. She also started organizations to address problems of crime. Jane also worked for women's voting rights (Jane Addams 1). As time went by, the organization expanded to more 10 buildings. The Hull House also has more services including an art gallery, child care, educational courses, and a public kitchen (Biography.com Editors 1). In 1926, she had a heart attack and caused her health to fail. She still continued to serve as president of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. The Nobel Peace was awarded to her and Nicholas Murray Butler in 1931. However, she was too sick to accept the award. One huge way she changed the world is that she was one of the major supporters of women rights and being able to vote. Eventually, her hard work and support paid off, because women were given the right to vote. Also, Addams was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP. This organization leads to the equality of white and colored people (Library of Congress 1). Jane was one of two founders of the Hull House, A house committed to the equality of the rich class, middle class, and the poor (Biography.com 1). Finally, Addams was one of the most involved supporters of stopping the use of children as industrial laborers. Eventually, her hard work, along with others, lead to children not being industrial laborers (Nicholas Murray Botler 1). Jane Addams was great because she was a feminist, a social reformer, and a pacifist (Biography.com 1). The things she did to support her cause make me feel like I should put more effort into a goal than I need to, so I can assure it happens.
