Who is Jane Addams? Jane Addams is known as a famous college educated woman who help the poor and social reform. Jane Addams was born on September 6, 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois. She was the eighth of nine children. She have two sister and a brother who also survive to adulthood. But, her mother and her rest of siblings has past away. Jane’s father was a prosperous miller and local political leader who serves sixteen years as a senator. He also was a officer in the Civil War and was a friend of Abraham Lincoln. But, it didn’t stop her to graduate from the Rockford Female Seminary in Illinois in 1881. She then traveled to Philadelphia and attended the Woman’s Medical College, but she quit because of her health problem. She continued to spent two years on reading and writing to decide what her future goal will look like. When she was twenty-seven years old during a tour to Europe, she met her new friend, Ellen G. Starr. They both visit the famed Toynbee Hall in London, England, which is a special facility established to help the poor. They were impressed of the settlement house and want to create one in the future. The dream did come true. In 1889, Addams and Starr created their own settlement in the city of Chicago. They named the Hull House, one of the building’s original owner. This house was created to help and provide service to the immigrant and poor people that lived in that area. They made speeches to discuss the needs of the neighborhood , raised money, convinced young women to help
