The Undying Literature of Jane Austen “Only the very weak-minded refuse to be influenced by literature and poetry.” -Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Angel. Literature opens the mind to a world of possibilities with the only limits being the definite words on page. Literature brings endless imagination and influences the growth of strong minds. Through literature, wisdom is given by reading stories and learning from them, instead of having to go through something to gain knowledge. Such literature can only exist because of substantial authors who have an understanding of the influence of literature. Jane Austen was proven to be one of these authors.

This is done through allusions, plays, spin-offs, etc. Broadway first showed Pride and Prejudice on the 5th of November, 1935 (Broadway). Throughout the years, Pride and Prejudice is still performed by different agencies. Hundreds of books have been made in reference toward her novels. There have been a number of films and shows produced as well. The spin-off from Pride and Prejudice, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, is one of the more recent films created. This movie gives an adventurous twist to the original story with there only being two main differences. These differences are the added zombies, and the strong charactered women in the book now have strong zombie-slaying-warrior-skills. An editor from “Slate” named L.V. Anderson claims in comparison of the original to the zombie version, this movie is “remarkably faithful to Austen’s text” (Anderson). This novel is about a girl and her novel enthusiast of a best friend. The best friend, Ashleigh, is found caught up in her latest obsession with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Ashleigh, being an enthusiast, drags Julie, the main character through another one of her adventures in trying to live life as if she was apart of the book. Because of this, they end up crashing a dance, getting involved in a play, and similar actions trying to find their true love stories to be in sync with that of Pride and Prejudice. Things do not seem to go as completely to plan when the supposed “Mr. Darcy” character falls in love with Julie instead of Ashleigh. Throughout this book, Ashleigh is continually making known the basic plot and that so and so is there next “step” because that is how it goes in the original plot of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
