Jane Austen is one of the most famous authors of the 19 century, and her various critiques of society are still applicable in today’s age. She is often remembered for what she writes about marriage and romantic love, but she also has a lot to say about family and the relationships between sisters in particular. Austen’s depictions of sisterhood within the familial structure will be the main topic of my thesis, but I will specifically look at the relationships between the sisters in Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. Once I understand the culture Jane Austen was writing in, I can better understand what she wrote and perhaps why she might have written it. The subject area of sisterhood will include the relationships between biological sisters, close female relatives, sisters-in-law, and maybe even the relationships between close female friends and the main female characters. Another area pertaining to this subject that I will have to look into would be the literary movements going on in the world at the time of publication and how they might have influenced Austen’s writings and views of society. I will also look into other popular novels published around the same time depicting similar relationships to see what they have to say about sisterhood. This will help me gain more understanding of Austen’s works, but also have a broader view of the works that might have influenced her. It will also be important for me to become familiar with Jane Austen’s personal life, specifically her relationship with her sister Cassandra, to see how that might have also influenced Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. She says a lot about family in her novels and how those relationships work as people grow and develop. All of her protagonists have at least one biological sister, and the relationships between sisters are always very important to the plot and the main characters. Although these relationships are very important to Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, they are often overshadowed by the romantic relationships and social commentary on gender. I hope that by writing about this equally important aspect of these two novels, will help bring understanding to an important theme in both Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility.
