Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 in the rural village of Steventon in Hampshire, England. She died on July 18, 1817 (Southam par. 1).
Jane Austen wrote many novels during her lifetime 6 of which were published. These 6 included Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey. Persuasion and Northanger Abbey were published after Austen’s death (Southam par. 1).
Jane Austen’s most famous title is Pride and Prejudice (Warren par. 3).
Austen’s social background influenced the themes of her books in that she wrote about the gentry or the land owning middle class. Some of her books involve inheritance which was included in her social life as being around gentry. Her father was a scholar who motivated his children to learn. Her mother was proficient in speaking and introduced acting as a form of entertainment for the family. Cassandra, her older sister, was the closest of her siblings throughout life (Southam par. 2).
Education for girls during the 1700s and 1800s was very limited. The primary purpose in girls attending public schools was to learn how to read the bible in order to teach their children about religion. Society saw no need to educate girls in order for them to attain a career because they were expected to marry (Equality 1).
Women in the 1700s and 1800s had few options in life. Their role in society was to marry, reproduce, raise the offspring, and serve their husband for the rest of their lives. Women even had to vow to obey their husband during weddings (Smith par. 1-2).
Women were barred from the right to vote, own property, and obtain a proper education (Women’s 1).
Elizabeth Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy, and Charles Bingley are the main characters in Pride and Prejudice (Pride
