In Jane Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice, she uses personal experiences to inspire her writing. After researching her life, very clear correlations have been found between Austen’s personal life and the Pride and Prejudice. The story begins with an upper class society and an upper middle class family, the Bennetts, struggling to be accepted. This novel is eerily similar to Austen’s own family story. By analyzing and reviewing Pride and Prejudice, one can learn more about Jane Austen and how her own journey is shown in her writing.
Elegance and upper class society is a concept very well revealed in Pride and Prejudice. The Bennet’s extravagant lifestyles included fancy dresses and immaculate estates. Jane Austen’s inspiration began when her cousin Eliza de Feuillide familiarized her with the more refined world (Juda 17). It was extremely known in the Bennet household that “a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife” (Austen 1). Austen’s father ran a school, and as a result Jane was always surrounded by boys. Their actions were very predictable to Austen and she became very comfortable with them in her life and later in her writing (Tomalin 3). In Austen’s early twenties, she began flirting at dances and other gatherings she attended (Juda 18). She then experienced a romantic relationship with Tom Lefroy, who ultimately ended the relationship because he could not marry a “penniless girl” (18). Similarly, In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Bennett lost Mr. Bingley when he was convinced by his family he deserved to marry a woman “who has all the importance of money, great connections, and pride” (Austen 123).
