Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, is a novel about a girl named Jane Eyre. The story spans a period of approximately three decades. Jane’s early life is filled with the loss of her parents and the cruelty of her aunt and cousins. When Jane is sent away to school she gradually feels loved and grows into a kind and intelligent woman. After two years of teaching at the school, Jane ventures away and experiences other forms of work, meets new people and finds true love. A repeating theme in Jane Eyre is the comparison between the rich and poor and how they are looked at by others in society. She was hired by the rochester family and given the title of governess. Lady Ingram is a rich woman who is a family friends with Mr. Rochester and would like to be Rochester’s wife. Even though Jane Eyre had a different personality than other people, she was insulted by the people around her just for being a governess. One of the problems that a governess had to face was their social status because they were not considered servants but they were not at the same level as their masters. Governesses could attend parties unlike servants and this makes Ingram jealous about Jane. The governess had a unique status inside the house because there was no other person who was of the same status as her. The main role of the governess was to teach and being caretaker of the children. Many families during that time period preferred to have a governess to take care of the children and to teach them. You had to be educated and also be skilled in other areas as well. Jane’s life as a governess was a very hard task for her and she had to work almost all day just helping out
